How many diapers does a baby need?
Updated October 14, 2026
Short answer
Newborns typically go through 8–12 diapers a day. From about day 5, expect 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours (fewer is a reason to call your pediatrician). Most babies use roughly 2,500–3,000 diapers in their first year.
Wet and dirty diapers in the first week
A newborn’s output is one of the clearest signs they’re getting enough milk, so it’s what nurses and pediatricians ask about first. A common guide used by lactation consultants:
| Day of life | Wet diapers (at least) | Dirty diapers |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | 1 | 1+ (black, sticky meconium) |
| Day 2 | 2 | 1–2 (meconium) |
| Day 3 | 3 | 2–3 (changing to green-brown) |
| Day 4 | 4 | 3+ (turning yellow) |
| Day 5 onward | 6 or more, heavy | 3–4+ yellow, seedy (breastfed) |
After about 6 weeks, breastfed babies often poop less — some go several days between dirty diapers, which is normal if the stool is soft. Formula-fed babies usually have fewer, firmer, tan-to-brown stools.
Diapers per day by age
| Age | Diapers per day (typical) |
|---|---|
| 0–1 month | 8–12 |
| 1–5 months | 6–10 |
| 5–9 months | 6–8 |
| 9–12 months+ | 5–7 |
That adds up to roughly 2,500–3,000 diapers in the first year. (TallyTot’s recap tells you the real number — and who changed them.)
Diaper sizes by weight
| Size | Weight (most US brands) |
|---|---|
| Newborn | up to 10 lb (4.5 kg) |
| Size 1 | 8–14 lb (4–6 kg) |
| Size 2 | 12–18 lb (5–8 kg) |
| Size 3 | 16–28 lb (7–13 kg) |
| Size 4 | 22–37 lb (10–17 kg) |
Size up when you see leaks or red marks on the thighs and waist, even if your baby is still within the weight range. Babies spend the shortest time in newborn size, so don’t stockpile it.
When to call the pediatrician
- Fewer than 6 wet diapers a day after the first week, dark yellow urine, or no wet diaper in 6–8 hours (possible dehydration).
- White, grey or pale clay-coloured stool — this can be a sign of a liver problem and needs a prompt call.
- Red stool (blood), or black stool after the first few days.
- Hard, pebble-like stools, or watery stools many times a day.
When in doubt, call — pediatric offices expect these questions.
Tracking it without thinking
In TallyTot a diaper is one tap: Wet, Dirty or Both. You can add a stool colour, and TallyTot flags pale or red/black colours as worth a call. The doctor summary shows wet and dirty diapers per day since the last visit — exactly the numbers your pediatrician asks for.
